How to Love Your Audit Team
All you need is love… and to meet that audit deadline!
These 7 ideas for loving on your team aren’t “squishy extras.” They’re secrets of retaining and motivating good auditors. When you love on your team, you not only build morale, you reinforce quality, trust, and commitment to the audit mission.
Try one or several of these ideas and watch your team flourish.
1. Celebrate small wins loudly
Auditing is often a behind-the-scenes job where victories don’t make headlines. Shine a light on progress, whether it’s finishing fieldwork on time, catching a tricky error, or running a smooth entrance conference. Public praise shows the team their work matters.
2. Give the gift of listening
Sometimes the best way to love your team is simply to listen without jumping in with solutions. When staff vent about workload, client resistance, or confusing standards, acknowledge their feelings. Validation builds trust and reduces burnout.
3. Share the “why” behind the work
It’s easy for auditors to get lost in checklists and tick marks. Take time to connect their tasks to the bigger mission: protecting taxpayer dollars, ensuring accountability, or improving public programs. Purpose is one of the greatest motivators.
4. Protect their time fiercely
Guardrails around work-life balance are a huge act of leadership love. Don’t normalize weekend emails. Push back against unnecessary fire drills from clients. Set realistic deadlines so auditors can do quality work without sacrificing family or sanity.
5. Invest in their growth
Show you care about more than today’s deliverable by sponsoring training, offering mentoring, and giving stretch assignments. Loving leadership looks like preparing people for bigger roles, even if it means they outgrow your team.
6. Model vulnerability and grace
Admit when you make a mistake. Share what you learn when an audit blows up. And when staff stumble, give them room to recover. Teams thrive when leaders normalize humanity instead of punishing it.
7. Add fun on purpose
Auditing doesn’t have to be all serious all the time. Bring in coffee for crunch week, hold silly award ceremonies, or kick off staff meetings with a quick icebreaker. Laughter bonds teams and lowers stress.
